EU Global Perceptions

The National Centre for Research on Europe (NCRE) has pioneered research on the EU’s external perceptions. To date, a number of research projects analysing Public, Elite and Media Perceptions have been undertaken in order to identify, measure and raise public awareness and extend knowledge of the European Union within many countries in the world. This website introduces the methodologies and research projects which have been undertaken, publications as well as the key researchers and leaders involved in the projects since 2002.

NCRE Leads a New Research Project on EU Images and Perceptions in Eastern and Southern Neighbourhoods

On September 1-3, in Vilnius (Lithuania), Associate Professor Natalia Chaban, with Professor Martin Holland, led a research workshop and a meeting of senior partner of the international research project “Crisis, conflict and critical diplomacy: EU perceptions in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine” (C3EU) Natalia is heading. C3EU is a research consortium supported by Jean Monnet Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission in 2015-18. The Meeting was attended by all partners: Ukraine’s National Institute of Strategic Studies, Cherkasy National University and Kharkiv National University; University of Ben Gurion at the Negev (Israel), TU Darmstadt (Germany); University of Leuven (Belgium), Royal Holloway (UK), Vytautas Magnum University (Lithuania), and University of Toledo (USA). Launching a New Transnational Research ProjectOn November 7-8, In Brussels, Associate Professor Natalia Chaban, with Professor Martin Holland, led a Launch Meeting of the new international research project “Crisis, conflict and critical diplomacy: EU perceptions in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine” (C3EU) Natalia is heading. C3EU is a research consortium of seven international partners supported by Jean Monnet Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission in 2015-18. The Launch Meeting was attended by all partners: Ukraine’s National Institute of Strategic Studies, Cherkasy National University and Kharkiv National University; University of Ben Gurion at the Negev (Israel), TU Darmstadt (Germany); University of Leuven (Belgium), Royal Holloway (UK), Vytautas Magnum University (Lithuania), and University of Toledo (USA).

Reporting research findings to EU policy makers

Reporting research findings to EU policy makersOn November 11, Associate Professor Natalia Chaban and Professor Martin Holland presented final findings of their research at the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels. Together with colleagues from Lithuania (think tank PPMI) and Germany (Free University of Berlin), Natalia and Martin led in 2015 a 10-country study of EU perceptions in 10 EU Strategic Partners: the USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and South Africa. Results, reported in an 8-hour presentation, are going to inform EU policy makers who are revising EU Global Strategy.

On November 15-18, Associate Professor Natalia Chaban is leading the first research training of the team of researchers within the framework of the project “Crisis, conflict and critical diplomacy: EU perceptions in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine” (C3EU). Researchers from Ukraine’s National Institute of Strategic Studies, Cherkasy National University and Kharkiv National University; University of Ben Gurion at the Negev (Israel) and TU Darmstadt (Germany) are undergoing training in the methods of media analysis – the first phase of the C3EU project.

 

“EU Global Perceptions” team presents at the International Conference

Conference Team“EU Global Perceptions” team – Associate Professor Natalia Chaban, Dr Serena Kelly, Dr Olga Gulyaeva and Connor Pokoati – presented their research on EU perceptions and images in Asia Pacific at the NZ Asia 2015 conference at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. The Panel “Europe from the Perspective from Asia” was organised and chaired by Dr Serena Kelly, NCRE Post-Doctoral Fellow and Lecturer.
