2011 NEWS AND UPDATES

The third workshop has recently been undertaken in Singapore. This three day workshop, based at the Asia-Europe foundation was an opportunity for the researchers to review the results of 6 months’ of daily detailed analysis of EU related news featured in over 40 media outlets across the 10 locations. Perhaps one of the startling findings was the dominance of the eurozone crisis in the coverage of the EU. There was also a public briefing which specifically reflected on the cases of Singapore and China.

In April 2011 all of the team met in Bangkok, Thailand for a 2 day comparative workshop presenting the initial media findings from the first three months of analysis. This workshop displayed a number of interesting findings which makes the way the EU was being portrayed in contrast to other years. We were also pleased to meet one of our new colleagues from Japan, Dr Paul Beacon.

On March 7-11, 2010, Professor Martin Holland and Suet-Yi Lai, NCRE PhD candidate, conducted the second Research Workshop for the ‘mirror’ perceptions project “Asia in the Eyes of the EU”. Tsinghua University (Beijing) hosted this workshop, which was also co-hosted by the NCRE and ASEF. This Workshop also marked the entry of Tsinghua University into the research project the “After Lisbon: The EU as an Exporter of Values and Norms through ASEM” (2011-12). The five-day workshop was opened by Ambassador Lu Yong Shou, ASEF Governor for China, and Ambassador Dominique Girard, Executive Director of ASEF. Students from Department of International Relations of Tsinghua University joined the nine researchers from Europe during the Workshop. The European researchers from eight EU countries presented their findings on their media analysis (data collection: September- November 2010). Dr. Michael Bruter from London School of Economics presented the results of the public opinion survey conducted in the eight EU countries. Both the European researchers and Tsinghua participants went through training on how to conduct in-depth interview with elites. Tsinghua participants also went through training on how to conduct media analysis.

Time Period: 2011-2012
Countries in Focus: The project is specifically focused on ten countries who are participants of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Those countries are: Japan, South Korea, China, India, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Russia

Workshops: The first meeting was held in Macau, December 2010. This workshop united not only the new researchers but was also a chance for the experienced researchers from the ‘India, Malaysia and Macau’ stage to impart their skills and make their final conclusions. The next workshop takes place in Bangkok, in April. This workshop will give researchers a chance to present preliminary findings on their media analysis.
