Project Design

Based on a wide-range of multidisciplinary research and monitoring methods, this project is designed around four major objectives:

All activities outlined are replicated in each respective country.  They reach a great number of students, researchers, and stakeholders and occur within the same time frame for each sub-project. Projects involve both young researchers in the beginning of their academic career and experienced noted scholars from different disciplines. Close cooperation and research synergy across borders are among major achievements of the project.

The results of study have been presented at international conferences and in scientific publications.  Results have also been presented to the EC Delegations in the Asia-Pacific region.  Project finds have been also incorporated into teaching activities of the NCRE and reported in regional media

Time Period: 2011-2012
Countries in Focus: Japan, South Korea, China, India, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Russia

Fieldwork:

The first stage of research (media) is currently underway. Native researchers from each country are conducting news analysis over a 6 month period – from January 1 until June 30 2011.
In each country 3 newspapers are monitored: a popular newspaper with the largest public circulation; the second newspaper listed is the leading business newspaper; and the third item is an English-language newspaper printed daily in each area (largely read by national elites and expatriates). In addition, the television station with the widest national outreach in each location are also monitored for content on the European Union.
The following table demonstrates which newspapers and television channels are currently being monitored:

Perceptions Table

What lies ahead:
The next stage (July-December) covers interviewing national elites from each country. Finally, a public opinion survey will be conducted using a professional service (see ‘methodology’ for more information).
